Yes, the color of granite can play a role in the overall cost of a headstone. Some granite colors are more rare and harder to source, which may increase their price. Other factors, such as the amount of cutting and polishing required, as well as shipping costs, also influence the final cost. We’re here to help explain these details so you can make a choice that feels right for both your loved one’s memorial and your budget.
We don’t have standard pricing for headstones because every memorial is unique. How much a headstone costs depends on many factors. The style (e.g., flat, upright, pillow), colour, size, and shape all affect the price. The cost also depends on how complex the design is, if you want custom artwork or laser etching, this also affects how much headstones cost. The best thing to do is to call us to make an appointment to discuss the different options that are suitable for you.
Each cemetery has its own guidelines or bylaws regarding memorial sizes, shapes, colours, and design features. Before selecting a memorial, it is important to confirm the cemetery’s requirements to ensure your chosen design meets their regulations.
Our team can help guide you through this process and work with you to create a beautiful, meaningful memorial that honours your loved one while meeting all cemetery requirements.
A quality monument is primarily determined by its material durability, craftsmanship precision, and structural stability. While aesthetics are subjective, a superior memorial must withstand environmental stressors-such as freeze-thaw cycles-for generations without losing its structural integrity or legibility.
Material Selection and Grade- The choice of raw material is the foundation of longevity. Not all granite is equal; think of granite like diamonds with the different grades of quality, Grande Prairie Memorials uses only the highest quality of granite. "Memorial Grade" granite is essential; lower-grade stone may be porous, contain iron deposits that cause rust stains, or have internal fissures that lead to cracking in cold climates.
Craftsmanship and Engraving - Quality is visible in the precision of the manufacturing and the depth of the detailing. Engraving techniques like sandblasting create deep, crisp lettering that remains legible even as the stone naturally weathers over decades. A high-quality finish (polished, honed, or pitched) should be consistent across the surface without pits, bumps, or artificial dyes used to enhance colour.
Structural Foundation and Installation - Even the best stone will fail if it is not installed correctly. Grande Prairie Memorials uses granite foundations. A quality monument requires a deep, level foundation ideally extending below the frost line to prevent shifting or tipping.
Verification and Trust-Since a monument is a long-term investment, quality is also defined by accountability. Grande Prairie Memorials is affiliated with national, provincial and local organizations that uphold ethical and professional codes of conduct; Monument Builders of North America, Better Business Bureau and Grande Prairie Chamber of Commerce. Grande Prairie Memorials has a perpetual warranty covering material defects and craftsmanship excellence. Grande Prairie Memorials ensures the design meets all cemetery regulations regarding size, material, and footprint.
The cost of a granite memorial depends on many unique details, as each tribute is custom designed and created.
Factors such as the granite colour, size, shape, finish, design details, and craftsmanship all influence the final price. Some granite colours are more rare or require additional sourcing, which can affect cost. Installation location, cemetery requirements, foundation needs, and site access may also impact the overall investment.
At Grande Prairie Memorials, we believe in providing clear guidance and transparent pricing, helping families understand their options and create a meaningful memorial that reflects their loved one while respecting their budget.
Memorial installations are completed during the warmer months, typically from late May through early October, when ground conditions are suitable. Because a proper foundation is essential for the long-term stability of your memorial, installations can only take place when the ground is dry, stable, and free of frost.
Weather and site conditions ultimately determine when installation can proceed. If conditions are too wet, frozen, or otherwise unsuitable, installation may be delayed to ensure your memorial is installed safely, securely, and to the highest standard.
Our team carefully monitors conditions throughout the season and will keep you informed of your scheduled installation date.
Yes. We offer second inscriptions for most existing memorials, allowing names, dates, and additional lettering to be added in the future. Whether you're planning ahead or commemorating a loved one at a later time, our skilled craftsmen carefully match the original lettering style, layout, and finish to ensure the new inscription blends seamlessly with the existing memorial. To provide the highest quality workmanship, second inscriptions are typically completed twice each year—once in the spring and once in the fall, depending on weather conditions and cemetery access.
