Granite is the most commonly used stone for creating memorials — and for good reason. Naturally strong and enduring, it is impervious to cold, heat, staining, and weathering, allowing it to retain its beauty for generations.
Its versatility allows it to be sculpted, carved, and shaped into a wide variety of designs, making it ideal for crafting personalized and lasting tributes.
At Grande Prairie Memorials, we use only the finest granite, carefully sourced ensuring the highest quality in every monument we create. Our granite and marble are sourced from Canada, the U.S., and around the world meeting and exceeding the industry’s most stringent standards. Granite monuments can be crafted in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to suit your vision and needs. Most designs can be used in both individual and companion sizes, allowing for a personalized tribute that reflects one life—or two lives joined together.
Shapes and surfaces can be combined for a truly unique monument.
These are 3" or 4" thick and are set flush with the ground or placed on a granite foundation.
Pillow Marker are set flat and may be placed on a foundation with or without a base. Pillow markers are sloped from 6"-8” high at the back tapering to 3"-5” in the front. Some pillows are in unique shapes, such as an open book.
Upright monuments are set vertically on a granite base. An upright monument can be 4”-8" thick at the top and have a uniform thickness to the base.
Hickey monuments are 3” thick at the top and increase to either 6” or 8" thick at the base.
The face and back of most monuments are typically polished to create a smooth, shiny surface – ideal for inscriptions and artwork. However, you can further customize the look and feel of your monument by choosing how many surfaces are polished.
You have the option of leaving the edges and top with a natural, rough-cut finish (often called “rock pitch”) or selecting a more refined look with additional polished surfaces.
Your monument can be polished on multiple sides. Each option offers a unique aesthetic — from rustic and natural to sleek and modern. Our team can help guide you in selecting the finish that best fits your vision and the memory of your loved one.
Sandblasting is a time-honoured method used to engrave text and artwork into granite monuments. It’s suitable for granite of all colours and provides crisp, clean, and long-lasting results.
This technique uses high-pressure air to propel fine sand through a nozzle, carefully carving the design and lettering into the granite’s surface. Whether it’s names, dates, meaningful quotes, or intricate artwork, sandblasting allows for precise detailing that stands the test of time.
It’s the most widely used method for memorial lettering and is trusted for its durability and clarity — ensuring your tribute remains as beautiful and legible for generations to come.
Laser etching is a modern engraving technique we use to create finely detailed lettering and images on memorials. This method allows us to incorporate photorealistic portraits, custom artwork, and intricate designs with exceptional precision and clarity.
To ensure the highest quality results and the best contrast, laser etching is performed exclusively on black granite, which provides the perfect surface for showcasing subtle details and depth.
Whether it’s a beloved photograph, a special symbol, or a meaningful scene, laser etching offers a beautiful way to personalize a monument and capture the spirit of a life well lived.
